Machine learning (ML)

Machine learning, often shortened to ML, is a type of artificial intelligence that allows computer systems to learn from data and improve their performance over time without being explicitly programmed for every task.

Instead of following fixed instructions, machine learning systems analyse patterns in data and use those patterns to make predictions or decisions.

Modern businesses generate large amounts of data. Machine learning helps organisations analyse this data more efficiently and identify patterns that might not be obvious through manual analysis.

Machine learning helps businesses:

  • Analyse large datasets quickly
  • Identify patterns and trends
  • Improve predictions and forecasting
  • Automate decision-making processes

How machine learning works

Machine learning models are trained using large datasets. During training, the system learns relationships between inputs and outcomes.

Once trained, the model can apply what it has learned to new data.

For example, a machine learning system used in advertising may analyse past campaign performance and predict which audiences are most likely to convert.

Types of machine learning

Machine learning systems are usually grouped into several categories.

Supervised learning
Models learn from labelled datasets where the correct outcome is known.

Unsupervised learning
Models analyse data without predefined labels to identify patterns or groupings.

Reinforcement learning
Systems learn by receiving feedback from actions and adjusting behaviour over time.

Each approach is suited to different types of problems.

Machine learning in marketing

Machine learning plays an important role in many marketing technologies. Advertising platforms use it to optimise campaigns, recommend audiences, and adjust bidding strategies automatically.

It is also used in recommendation systems, customer segmentation, and predictive analytics.

These applications help businesses deliver more relevant experiences and improve marketing efficiency.
